in the City of Pittsburgh. Where do they all go?
Carlow
University was founded in 1929 as a private, Catholic liberal
arts college for women. While continuing to serve primarily women, Carlow's
enrollment is open to all. More than 1,632 undergraduate students and 522 graduate students are enrolled
in more than 50 academic programs offered at the school's main campus in Oakland
and at its satellite campuses in Greensburg and Cranberry. Carlow also
has extensive programming for graduate and nontraditional adult students.
With a student to faculty ratio of 13:1, Carlow students enjoy a personalized
educational experience rooted in a long tradition of academic excellence.
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is located in
Oakland near Pitt. Founded in 1967 when the merger of Mellon Institute
and the famous Carnegie Tech formed what is now a highly ranked institution
of higher learning and a major research center. Carnegie Mellon is composed
of seven colleges: the Heinz School, Carnegie Institute of Technology,
School of Computer Sciences, College of Fine Arts, College of Humanities
and Social Sciences, Mellon College of Science and the Graduate School
of Industrial Administration. The university enrolls approximately 9,663
students excluding non-degree seeking students.
Chatham
College was founded in 1869 as the Pennsylvania Female College.
The College intended to provide women with an education comparable to
that which men could receive at the time at "colleges of the first class".
Chatham grants Bachelor's degrees to women only; graduate programs are
coeducational. The college enrolls approximately 1,200 students.
Community
College of Allegheny County (CCAC) has four regional campuses:
Allegheny, Boyce, North and South. The college has an interdisciplinary
approach which responds to the educational and training needs of the businesses
and industries in the Allegheny County region. Approximately 30,782 students
attend CCAC annually on a credit basis and 48,175 on a non-credit basis
for a total of 79,407.
Duquesne University is a private, urban, Catholic
university founded in 1878. Situated on a bluff overlooking the downtown
area, Duquesne offers educational opportunities in the liberal arts, business
administration, education, health sciences, music, natural and environmental
sciences, nursing,
pharmacy, and leadership & professional development. The university also
houses a law school and many other graduate departments and programs.
Enrollment is approximately 8,000.
La
Roche College is a private, Catholic, co-educational, liberal
arts institution offering courses in undergraduate and graduate studies.
Founded in 1963, the college enrolls approximately 1,600 full and part
time students. The college is minutes away from the Ross Park Mall, and
it is a short trip from city attractions.
Point
Park University is an independent, four-year, co-educational,
career-oriented institution located in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh.
Founded in 1960, the campus is centered in four buildings downtown along
with The Playhouse of Point Park in Oakland. The downtown Library Center
houses the Point Park University Library, the Downtown Branch of the Carnegie
Library of Pittsburgh (CLP), and the Business Library of the CLP. The
university enrolls over 3,200 students.
Robert
Morris University, founded in 1921, is one of the leading universities
in the region and among the largest private institutions of higher learning
in Pennsylvania. Approximately 5,000 full-time and part-time undergraduate
and graduate students from 29 states and 36 countries are enrolled at
RMU. Robert Morris University built its reputation by offering strong
academic programs in business. To prepare students for success in a changing
and competitive workforce, the University created programs in actuarial
science, communication, information systems, engineering, elementary education,
environmental science, media arts and nursing in the past decade. The
University now offers more than 30 undergraduate degree programs and 18
master's and doctoral degree programs. RMU offers 22 varsity athletic
programs and competes at the NCAA Division I level.
University of Pittsburgh (PITT) is a public, state-related,
nonsectarian, co-educational institution. Founded in 1787, the university
enjoys a national reputation for research and scholarship. It enrolls
over 30,000 students at four regional campuses in addition to the main
campus in Oakland. The 132-acre campus has over 90 buildings, which house
various departments, colleges and schools.
Pittsburgh offers diverse opportunities for students to pursue their
academic and career interests. Evidence of Pittsburgh's growth as an educational
and career center can be found in the research facilities that exist in
the area and in the high caliber of students who have graduated from the
city's colleges and universities.
