Shopping In Pittsburgh Overview
Downtown Pittsburgh, or the "Golden Triangle", is full of a wide variety of specialty shops, as well as several department stores and malls. You can enjoy one-stop shopping, great food and drink. Your best plan of attack is to spend a day getting acquainted. Extra bonus - you can get anywhere by bus, subway, or on foot. Plus, travel on a bus or "T" within the downtown area is free!
Located mainly on Forbes and Murray Avenues, there are many local businesses ready to serve the needs of the student. Take your pick of the many pizza shops, hair salons, fine quality clothing stores, and specialty shops ready to enhance your stay in Pittsburgh. Squirrel Hill has two movie theaters, a half-dozen coffee houses and really great bars. Special events such as the Squirrel Hill Happening in the summer can be fun too!
This is one of busiest sections of the city, both day and night. Forbes & Fifth Avenues are considered the "main drags." In Oakland, one can enjoy foods ranging from legendary hot dogs and sandwiches to ethnic specialties. In the shops, you'll find anything from greeting cards and comic books to jewelry and vintage clothing. To finish out your day, there are plenty of places to enjoy a bite and listen to a local band, dance or just hang out. Also located in Oakland, the shops on Craig Street are a diverse group of the unusual and eclectic in clothing, novelties, art galleries, crafts and dining. On Craig Street, you can order lunch in French, Italian or Middle Eastern cuisine, buy an Irish sweater, string a bead necklace, view the latest in art, drape yourself in exotic clothing, or satisfy your craving for whatever collectibles you fancy.
A long-standing and well-known shopping area, the stores in Shadyside are located on Walnut and its adjoining streets including Ellsworth Ave. It is a cosmopolitan grouping of fine shops and eating establishments. In Shadyside you can indulge your love for food, re-fashion your make-up and hair, find the latest accessory for your apartment, fulfill your preppy fantasy with the finest classic styles, or just enjoy good conversation and a few drinks.
Over the Birmingham Bridge along East Carson Street is a section of Pittsburgh which is one of the hottest hangouts for students. There are music stores, coffee houses, a variety of unique specialty shops, a movie theater, clothing stores, restaurants and some of the coolest bars. The South Side is also the host of the biggest community festival each summer. Ride one of the inclines to Mt. Washington for a beautiful view of the city from one of the mountain's overlooks!
Talk about innovation: the Freight House Shops exist in what used to be the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Station. There probably wasn't a glass elevator then, a comedy club, or Chinese restaurant. In Station Square, you can send a giant banner to your favorite person, sing your heart out, or buy unique gifts. You can also munch on some French bread, grab a hot dog or dine in an elegant restaurant overlooking the river.
One of the most colorful areas to shop in Pittsburgh is the Strip District. This area located on Smallman Street and Penn Avenue, once known for its wholesale warehouses, has become a bustling marketplace. You can find produce, groceries, flower shops, specialty shops, eateries and coffee houses, dance clubs, and bars, just to name a few. This is one area where exploring can turn up many treasures.
Sitting on the banks of the Monongahela River, The Waterfront is Pittsburgh’s premier shopping and entertainment destination, featuring a movie megaplex, numerous stores, restaurants, great video arcade and much more! Take Exit 5 off of 1-376 toward Squirrel Hill/Homestead. Stay straight onto Homestead Grays Bridge and make a right at the light on the bridge. With Sandcastle & Kennywood nearby, you can make a day of it!
Fox Chapel is home to The Waterworks Mall and impressive array of foremost retailers, including Wal-Mart, Jo-Ann Fabrics, The Childrens Place, Old Navy, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. It offers a well-balanced mix of full-service and fast-food restaurants, such as Panera Bread, Abate, Dingbats, Wendys, Empress Chinese Restaurant and Uncle Sams Subs; a 10-screen cinema; Giant Eagle; Barnes & Noble; and more than 30 nationally recognized specialty shops.
Looking for a full day of shopping? Just head down Parkway West towards the airport to find Robinson Township, home to a hodge podge of new shops & shopping centers! From IKEA at Robinson Town Centre to Sam's Club & Lowes Home Improvement Center across the way in the newest shopping center, The Point at North Fayette, smart shoppers can find everything on their shopping lists.
Located in Tarentum, Pittsburgh Mills is the newest of the area's shopping malls which new stores opening over the next few months. Pittsburgh Mills is located in Frazer Township, just 16 miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh and along Route 28 - minutes from the Harmar interchange on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills will have a unique mix of retailers including Kaufmann’s, JCPenney, Linens ‘n Things, Sears Grand, Borders Books and Music, while The Village at Pittsburgh Mills will offer a dynamic collection of retailers, restaurants and hospitality venues, including Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Springhill Suites, PNC Bank, First Commonwealth Bank, Longhorn Steak House, Steak ‘n Shake, & Eat ‘n Park.
